Should you try writing Fan Fiction?

Guest post by Steffie Dawn

E. L. James, author of the Fifty Shades trilogy, openly admits that the books were first a Twilight Fan fiction called Master of The Universe. The story originally included Bella Swan and Edward Cullen the stars of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series instead of who millions of fans worldwide now know as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.

So what is fan fiction?

It’s simple. Fan fiction is fiction written by fans of franchises worldwide. Readers can then read and review these works and continue to share with other fans.

Fan Fiction is a popular concept with millions of people flocking to websites to read and write about beloved characters and share them with like-minded people. It’s also no secret that E. L. James wasn’t the first author to partake in the world and she most definitely won’t be the last! Meg Cabot, the write of The Princess Diaries admitted to writing Star Wars fan fiction and like many authors today admits that it’s a great platform for any wannabe author.

Fan fiction allows any writer the chance to experiment with writing before attempting or even after attempting to write their own worlds. Partaking in worlds already created allows writers the chance to experiment and develop their own writing styles with readers being given the chance to review and possibly help the writer improve their work.

Harry Potter has over 640,000 pieces of fan fiction written on fanfiction.net some of these stories have over millions of hits from readers worldwide who are fans of the books by J. K. Rowling. The same occurs across many popular franchises such as Twilight and Glee. Fifty Shades is heading for 1,000 fan fictions!

So if you want to write, why not check out fan fiction first? Have a favourite book or TV Show? Give writing fan fiction a go, this not only helps you develop your own writing style but also gives you the writer a chance to build a fan base. Believe me, some of your fan fiction readers will be the first to buy your book.
